Mathieu Ajan's The Treehouse Exhibition - Don't let the high rises block your horizons

Mathieu Ajan, a young man with a clear love and passion for artistic stories portrayed through his photography. I was strolling through social media and came across the sold out post from his Instagram, sharing good news of how many people were interested in experiencing the free viewing of his Treehouse Exhibition.

Images were powerful, images I had questions about, and images that told stories that were yet to be revealed by the South London Nigerian photographer when viewers asked several questions, in which Mathieu provided in depth answers.

When being asked, how his imagery helps him to grow, he answered:

"I'm in my own realm when I photograph. We really don't know what's out there. It's good to expose yourself to many things, and think outside of that box. Let me do something and share it with the world. 99% of the time I used to be scared of showing my work, and this exhibition is living proof of me breaking that barrier."

Further questions from viewers included: What's been a successful moment?

"Sharing something I really, really love especially through capturing these images."

What emotions do you like to evoke when capturing these photos?

"A mother and a child approached me and I ensure that these photos are as natural as possible. This image represents the importance of family, and despite how often family disagree with one another, the bond will never be broken."

Through your exhibition, what do you hope it will give to people?

“Don't let the high rises block your horizons - I’m letting people know that they should always persevere and never give up. Just keep going. There are images of me knelt down, naked and afraid. The next image shows me leaping, jumping away from the fears and worries society throws at me.”

What advice would you give to someone that wants to quit their 9-5 and pursue their passion full-time, like you?

“Jobs come and go. If you believe that your passion will take you places, remain proactive and do something each day that will push you further toward your dream. Also it's so important to surround yourself with the right people that will push you further.”

It takes a lot of effort to put these exhibitions together. This was a free event you've invited us to! How can we financially support you?

“I really want to invest in our community so in whichever way you support me' I'm thankful for it.”

As a young man, how do you overcome it and combat stereotypes?

“I don't see any structures which tell me what I should and shouldn't create. I'm just a normal guy, people can create whatever impressions they like through my images. I'll always be an artist and my own person.’
